Remington almost reached the emergency exit when he felt the sharp pain in his back. He collapsed to the ground right away. All he could think of at this point was Laura and the baby before he slipped into unconsciousness. Lieutenant Officer Briggs walked over to Steele's still body, which was lying in a puddle of blood. He bent down over him to see if he still had a pulse. He recognized him right away as he felt for his pulse. There was a weak one, so, he ordered the younger Officer to radio in an ambulance. "What in the HELL were you doing here!" he thought out loud. The Briggs family had been good friends to both Steele and Laura for about 3 years. He knew Steele, and he couldn't believe that he'd be there to rob the bank! He refused to believe that.

As soon as the ambulance arrived, so did the limo. Laura had an uneasy feeling all the while Steele had gone off with Felicia to help her get her necklace. It was a feeling of Doom, a feeling she had never experienced in her life. Laura got out and ran over to Briggs, who was now standing outside. "What happened?! Was anyone hurt?!" she asked nervously. The Officer had her sit down in the squad car as he explained what had happened. She started to sob. She briefly explained their side
of the story. "We know what? We found this at the scene", he showed her a card with The Hand on it. Felicia thought she had won the war. "We have some men out searching for the woman involved. One of our men caught a glimpse of her, but could not get her. She was too quick!" stated
Briggs. The distinguished looking middle aged man went over to one of the paramedics and explained that he was gonna follow them to the hospital, but Laura overheard him talking and insisted on riding with Remington. They helped her into the vehicle and hurried off.

Laura stared at Steele, who was very pale. He hadn't even regained consciousness and that was a big concern to the paramedics. "Tell me," Laura questioned, "How is he?" "We're not too sure", answered the male paramedic, "He'd been shot in the left Kidney, and if he has already hemorrhaged too much," he paused trying to find the easiest way to put it without giving her too much of a shock, "We may lose him. If he hadn't, there's a big chance he'll survive." Laura knelt down beside him and held his hand which had dried blood all over it, "Please don't leave us!" she pleaded. If there was a time she needed to pray to God most in her life, now was certainly the time! She caressed his hand and kissed him on the lips, "I love you sweetheart", she said softly in his ear as
she sat back.

At the emergency waiting room, a nurse handed papers for Laura to fill out. Laura felt alone. She needed someone's shoulder to cry on, and some motherly advice sure would come in handy. She was overtired. Just as she finished filling out the forms and handed them to the RN, she heard
someone say, "There you are!" She looked and spotted Mildred walking down the hall towards her. She saw the serious look on Laura's face and the smile dropped off her face immediately. "What's happened, Miss Holt?!" she inquired. "Mildred, have a seat," Laura instructed her, trying to seem strong. Mildred took a seat in the waiting room. "I hope nothing bad happened to the boss!", she said. "As a matter of fact, Mildred, something has", she informed her. "Did he get arrested?!",
asked the older woman. "I'm afraid it's much more serious. He's been shot in the Kidney. Mildred! He might not make it!" she started to cry again, "You should've seen him! He looked so pale! I wish this was only a nightmare and I would wake up to find him by my side, cause that's what this feels like!" Mildred hugged her.

About a few hours past and a young Doctor came and talked to the two women. "Hello, my name is Doctor Carter," he introduced himself formally, "I'm Mrs. Laura Steele, and this is Mildred Krebs, a close friend," she said shaking his hand. "Your husband has lost a lot of blood, so we gave him some. We removed the bullet and repaired the kidney. We're keeping him under observation for the next 24 hours to make sure there are no adverse reactions to the surgery and/or medications given. He arrested once during surgery, and we wanna make sure that doesn't happen again as well. You can see him in a few hours if you'd like, but he may not be awake," he informed them. "This arrest," Laura questioned, "Will this be a problem in the future? If so, what will we do then?" "We'll see. Chances are not too likely. His blood pressure dropped so low, his heart stopped due to trauma," the Doctor answered, "That was one thing we were all concerned about when he arrived." This wasn't really happening, Laura thought, it couldn't be! She started to feel the room spinning again. Mildred and the Doctor grabbed hold of her and sat her down. "Are you alright, Mrs. Steele?" he asked. His voice sounded like he was in a tunnel to her. "She's pregnant", Mildred answered. "Then maybe you should get her home so she could get some rest. I'll call you if there are any changes. Doctors
orders!" he insisted as he said goodbye and left to check on a patient.

Back at the apartment, Mildred made sure Laura went to bed and got some sleep. They said a prayer for Steele and Laura went into the bedroom. She slipped on one of her husband's pajama tops and laid down in the king sized bed. Mildred came in to check on her a half hour later. Laura
looked like a little doll sleeping in that big bed. Laura began to have a pleasant dream about their first night together in Ireland.

The next morning Laura woke up at around 10:30, slipped on a robe, and headed out to the living room. Mildred had made her a hot breakfast. "Good morning, Mrs. Steele!" she greeted her with a smile. "Good morning, Mildred," Laura answered, "Has the Doctor called yet?" Oh! Yes, he had", she replied, "The boss has regained consciousness, and everything is looking pretty good so far. He's still a bit out of it from the pain killers though."

"I guess the prayers helped, Mildred!" Laura said excitedly, "I had a dream about our first night together. It felt so real! Maybe that was a sign that everything is gonna be alright!" "I guess so!" Mildred added. Just then Laura jumped out of her chair, "I'm going to take a shower and get dressed to see Remington," she said as she headed for the bedroom "OK, I'll meet you there. He's in room #4188," replied Mildred as she headed for the door, "I'll be there in an hour and a half!" she added as she left the apartment. She hadn't seen Laura this happy in the last 2 weeks!

Laura was anxious as she entered her husband's hospital room. He was asleep yet so she tried to contain her excitement. She went over to his bedside and sat in the chair close by. She watched him sleep and was glad to see that he was getting more of his color back. He looked as if he were waking, so she got up out of her chair, and sat on the edge of his bed. She leaned over him and ran her fingers through his shiny black hair, and kissed him gently on the lips. He felt her touch and opened his eyes. "Oh God, Laura! I'm so sorry I put you through this," he said his voice sounding a bit tired, "How are you and the baby?" "Don't apologize, darling. We're all right," she assured him, "I'm sure you'll be doing fine too." "Really?' he replied, "Right now I feel like I've been shot! I think I'm gonna need some more medication." Laura kissed him passionately, "Now how do you feel?" she asked. "Much better!" he said, "Do it again." She looked into his blue eyes and said, "I think this experience has made me realize just how deeply I love you. I've always known that I had feelings for you, and I knew that we were meant to be together. The thought of living the rest of my life without you was killing me!" "Believe me Laura, I feel the same way. I've always known just how much I love you, and now I think I even feel a stronger bond." he assured her with a warm smile on his face and a look of pure love in his eyes, "I've always promised you that I wouldn't leave you. How could I?! I love you too much. I was hooked from the moment we met!" Laura gave him a long passionate kiss as Mildred entered. "OH! I'm sorry guys!" she said as she left. The couple stopped kissing and Laura went to call Mildred in. 'Guess what guys?" she said excitedly, "
Felicia won't be in our hair anymore! They found her body in a trash bin outside a nearby restaurant!" "Looks like someone knows trash when they see it!" Remington stated.

SIX MONTHS LATER
*************************
Mildred entered the Hospital room and noticed the Harts were sitting in chairs. "Hi everyone!" she said with a big smile on her face. Laura and Remington looked very tired. "Hi Mildred!" the Harts and Steeles greeted. "Let me see the little bundle!" she insisted. "Go ahead!" Remington offered. She looked at the beautiful baby boy lying so peacefully asleep in his bassinet. Patrick Daniel Carlton Steele was born at 1 am and weighed 7 lbs 4ozs. "He looks so much like you boss!" she
said as she picked him up.

"We have an announcement to make!" said Jennifer as she grabbed hold of Jonathan's hand. "We're 20 weeks pregnant! We had the ultrasound taken and we're pretty sure it's a girl!" she announced excitedly. "That is just wonderful! Congratulations!" said Steele with a lot of enthusiasm. Laura slowly got up out of her bed. She was very achy all over her body from neck to toe. She walked over to the Harts very slowly and hugged them, "Congratulations!" After the guests left and the Steeles were alone again, Laura thought about how happy she truly felt, despite the
achiness and fatigue. She had made up with her father, she had a wonderful husband, a beautiful baby, terrific friends, and the agency. Life couldn't be better!
