Steele Only a Dream
By Ulrike Gubelt

This is my explanation for the telephone ringing after the lights went out at the end of the fifth season. Maybe the producers thought of it as well, in case RS would be back sometime...

Disclaimer: I don´t own the characters of Remington Steele and Laura Holt. Just borrowing them for entertainment.

They embraced each other tightly and looked deep in their eyes for a long moment. A moment that seemed to last forever. There were no doubts, no problems... nothing that would tear them apart. He turned for a moment and switched off the lights. When he turned again he saw her smile and that told him that this time it would finally happen... A few moments from now they would be...

The telephone rang.

...together, he sighed when he slowly returned from his dream. A dream? Everything was a dream? He opened his eyes and found himself in his bedroom. He sat up and looked around the room, still not believing it was only a dream. No marriage, no castle... and sad but true no Laura, ready to take the final step...

Finally the phone stopped ringing. He laid back on his bed and closed his eyes. He started thinking about his dream.

Me -married? Okay, ...with Laura... and only with her... it would be nice, but under such circumstances. Laura would have never said yes or si. He smiled. Marriage on a tuna boat? A silly dream!

Suddenly he stopped smiling as he remembered another fact of his dream. Daniel! When everything else was a dream... this was a dream, too. He wasn't dead, was he? First thing to check when he got up...he thought, not noticing he was falling asleep again.

**************************

Where was he? She put the receiver down again and looked worried at her wrist watch.
Half past ten. It was Saturday, so maybe he just slept in. But on the other hand it wasn't like him to forget about a meeting with her. He should have been at her place at nine so that they would have enough time for their trip to San Diego today.

Laura thought one moment longer.

Maybe he was ill and needed her help. He didn't look very healthy last night. So, better check if he was all right she thought. She took her purse and left her loft.

***************************

He stood at the window of the bedroom and looked down into the garden. He couldn't believe what he was seeing... His heart seemed to burst in thousands of little pieces.
Laura and Tony walked through the park of Ashford castle hand in hand. He whispered something in her ear and she laughed. Even a child could see that they were in love...
"And they don't even try to hide it from me?" he whispered.

"Would that be much better?" A worried voice from behind asked. He turned and looked in Mildred's eyes.

He didn't answer just sighed and lowered his head. He felt Mildred's hand on his arm and looked up again.

"Boss, don't give up now! You have to fight for her... Stop being nice to her and stop pretending to not knowing about the two of them. Tell her what you've seen and how you feel!" she said in a commanding voice.

"No!" He shook his head and turned back to the window, looking outside and find the two of them lying on the grass kissing." I don't want her to tell me that she's in love with him... I can see it myself, it's quite obvious..."

Mildred became furious. She grabbed him and turned him around and said in a harsh voice, "You don't see anything! But I... I see a woman that is in love with a man too frightened to say what he feels about her and so starts thinking he just married her out of his need to stay in America...How do you think the two of you can go on like this." He sighed and Mildred tried to start in a softer, almost pleading tone. "God, can't you see it. She's in love with you...and only you."

He laughed a bitter laugh. "Mildred, just look outside the window and than say it again." He said, and Mildred looked outside and found the two of them still lying on the grass.

She sighed. Okay, Mrs. Holt- Steele you had your game... but now fun is over! she thought.

"She's playing with you!" She said aloud. " She was hurt by this marriage thing and that's her way of getting childish, helpless revenge. She's trying to provoke you so that you come out of your hiding...she wants you to be jealous, so that you would finally tell her about your feelings... Why can't you two finally stop playing this damn game and give in to each other... None of you will ever win this game! Can't you see it? ...Why can't you say to her: okay, I made mistakes, I honestly regret them but please... please stop hurting me! I love you, so please stop this game with Tony! "She paused to find any reaction on his face to her speech, but found nothing. He really wasn't someone to show emotions openly! She sighed.

"I know... as soon as you tell her how you feel... she'll shoot this archeologist straight to the moon! I'm sure. But if you don't get out of this defensive mode, you'll risk losing her... and that would be the worst thing for you, I know that ,too." she ended with a shaking voice. Before she turned and left the room Remington noticed tears running down her cheeks.

He sighed and turned to the window. They were gone, but he starred at the place where they had laid in the grass and thought about Mildred's words.

She was absolutely right. He couldn't think about loosing her, and that's why he'd to stop this stupid game...

After their first night he thought Laura finally realized that he was in love with her. But now he recognized although that night was definitely a wonderful night for both of them Laura needed more than that to be sure they belonged together... But what would he say?

He noticed that someone entered the room. By the way the person walked through the room to him he could tell it was her. He didn't move an inch, still starring outside onto the grass. Laura stopped right next to him and looked outside as well...

She rang the doorbell, knocked on the door again and again but there was no answer!
Either he wasn't at home or something happened to him!

She took her lockpick out of her purse and opened the door. The living-room looked liked always, but she could hear a voice from the bedroom. When she got nearer to the door she noticed it was his voice. She couldn't understand what he was saying although she put her ear at the door. Should she open the door? But there was this old fear again: Was he alone? She really wasn't in the mood to find him in bed with another... Stop it, Laura, she told herself. After another sigh she managed to open the door carefully.

No, he was alone... she let out the breath she didn't know she was holding. At that moment he stopped talking, and so she entered the room carefully. She looked at him. It was such a wonderful and even arousing picture. She was worrying sick and he was peacefully asleep! No,...not peacefully. He must have had an eventful dream.

The pillows and blankets lay beside the bed so that he was lying in front of her covering by nothing else than boxer-shorts. She smiled to her reaction as her palms began to sweat. It wasn't very often that she had the opportunity to see him like this. And yes, why deny it, she loved seeing him like this! He was such an attractive man...

She stood for another few moments watching his deep breathing and the pearls of sweat on his forehead, then she decided to go. He would call her later. It would be her secret that she had been here and had watched him. Before she left, she thought she should cover him.

She took the blanket from the floor and carefully started to cover his beautiful body. She leaned over his face, just inches away from his lips. It was hard not kissing him, but she didn't want him to wake up. She sighed.

When her breath touched his face he moved and his face suddenly showed pain and hurt.
Laura became worried again. This feeling got even stronger when he cried out loud.

"No! You can't do it to me... Laura"

Laura didn't know what to do. Should she wake him? On the other hand she was curious to hear what she couldn't do to him. She decided to stay for a moment and carefully sat down at the edge of his bed.

His hands clenched into the mattress. Somehow Laura thought it wasn't fair to stay and listen to him, without knowing about her presence. But when he started to talk again it was too late to go...

"Laura, I need you... If you leave me now, you take away every thing I have on this world! Don't go... I love you. I've always loved you and I´ll love you for always... I know I hurt you with our bloody fake marriage on that tuna boat, and in Mexico... I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you... I'm tired of this game... not showing our feelings for one another... I love you and I know you love me... not him! I know you used Tony to take revenge on me but now... Stop hurting me!

His head moved from one side to the other. Laura swallowed. Breathing was hard at that moment. God, am I dreaming? It went through her mind again and again. She was frozen in place, starring at Remington and his desperate face.

"Stop hurting me!" he begged once more before she finally was able to move.

Carefully she touched his warm and wet shoulder, but took her hand back when she heard his moan.

No, it wasn't a dream... She was sitting on his bed and he finally said the words she needed to hear. Okay, he said them in a dream but they were the truth...she felt it inside her heart. He was right about ending this game...

She stopped thinking when she noticed that she had bent herself over his face again and a tear dropped on his lips. This time she couldn't resist.

Softly their lips met. Her soft warm lips seemed to heal his wounds. He sighed. But than he remembered it was only a dream...

"I'm sorry... I never meant to hurt you!" she whispered.

He took a moment to relish the words, but then his eyes sprang open...

"Laura?" he asked almost shocked. It wasn't a dream, she really was just inches away from his face and she was crying.

He took her face in his hand and tried to dry her tears with his thumbs.

"I didn't want to hurt you..." she softly repeated. " Although I don't know what I've done in your dream... I'm sorry... I don't want to be the cause for your bad dreams..."

He pulled her close and kissed her. " It wasn't a bad dream...it was a ... well, an exiting dream but not really bad ..."

"So how come you said I should stop hurting you..."

"You heard that?" finally realizing why she was crying

She nodded and sat up, only to have him follow her movements.

"Yeah, you said quite a lot..."

"Really?" He didn't know if he should get nervous or not. He remembered his dream and if he had said all that aloud...

"Yeah, although there were lots of things I didn't understand, for example the tuna boat marriage," she smiled and he thought that he'd no need to get nervous "and this Tony thing... but there were things I understood quite well..."she swallowed.

"Such as?" he said with a soft voice.

Laura smiled nervously. "You're right about ending our game of jealousy and what ever it was in the last four years...I know it was only a dream... and if I should misinterpret your statements..."

"You're not misinterpreting anything, Laura."

"So it's true...?" she stopped again, still afraid to ask.

He took her face in his hands and looked deep into her brown eyes. "Yes, it's true..." he said in a warm and soft tone, "I love you Laura. Always have... always will."

Tears rolled down her cheeks again, but she couldn't help it. He stroked her cheeks and just looked at her. He wasn't lying... her heart told her it was okay...So much love was in his eyes, and all old fears and doubts were suddenly gone.

With a shaking voice she answered finally " I love you, too, Remington." There- they did it! Finally ended their silly game and get honest with their feelings, both thought.

As if there had been a secret sign, both started to laugh at once. Every doubt, every problem of their relationship disappeared at that moment ( and wouldn't return again!)

They embraced each other tightly, still laughing. After a while he loosened his grip to look in her eyes once more. Laura smiled.

"You need to tell me about that marriage, okay?"

"I promise, I will... but now..."

"Now?" she asked getting nervous again.

"Now we cancel our trip to San Diego and book a weekend at my apartment. What do you think?"

"I always loved your ideas, Mr.... no, Remington...and as it is much to late for San Diego we might as well..."

"Might as well? You don't sound very enthusiastic."

"Just to build up your motivation."

"Thank you, but I don't think I need any more motivation. You sitting on my bed, telling me you love me... after four years... is definitely motivation enough..."

Only a moment later their lips met and Remington laid back, pulling Laura on his chest.

And finally they were together...
